Norval Morrisseau

A self-taught artist born in Sand Point Reserve, Ontario. Known for using bright colours to portray traditional stories, political messages, and spiritual themes in his work, he created in what is known as “Woodlands School,” “legend/medicine painting”, or “x-ray art.” Signing his Ojibwa name in Cree syllabics as “Copper Thunderbird” he worked to restore cultural pride in his people.
